Coronation Street’s Jim McDonald hasn’t been seen since 2018 and the soap has now issued an update on the former cobbles resident
Coronation Street has offered an unexpected update on former legend Jim McDonald and it’s not good news.
Jim (Charlie Lawson) made his debut on the soap way back in 1989, rocking up to Weatherfield with wife and future Rovers Return manager Liz (Beverley Callard), and their twin sons Steve (Simon Gregson) and Andy (Nicholas Cochrane).
And it’s fair to say Jim – who was a former soldier who served in The Royal Engineers – caused plenty of drama on the cobbles.

From alcohol addiction and domestic violence to several stints in prison, Jim’s time in Weatherfield has not been short of chaos.
Jim appeared on-and-off on the ITV soap from 1989 to his most recent appearance in 2018, when he made his comeback to try and swindle Liz out of her money. He was eventually caught out and went on the run in 2018 and has not been seen since.
However, during Monday’s episode (August 5) the soap shared a big update on Jim – but fans have predicted a shocking twist ahead.
While at Dev Alahan’s (Jimmi Harkishin) stag do, Nick Tilsey (Ben Price) brought up Jim to Steve and asked him how he is doing. Steve replied: “Well, we haven’t really seen him since he tried to con me and my mum.”
On a Corrie Facebook fan page, viewers soon reacted to Steve mentioning Jim on the soap. But they can’t help but think the character could be set to get killed off, in a similar fashion to Les Battersby’s (Bruce Jones) off-screen death last year.
“Nice Jim McDonald mention tonight,” one person penned. Someone else added: “I think they’re going to kill him off, planting the seed now…”
A third chimed in: “I thought that, like what they did with Les last year.” Echoing their thoughts, another wrote: “Well he definitely wouldn’t return so it’s likely.”
Actor Charlie has previously said he wouldn’t be surprised if the soap killed Jim off. He said: “It wouldn’t shock me if he dies in Australia.
“I think it would be a terrible waste of a character, and I would stand up and have a pint and salute to him. But I wouldn’t be broken-hearted because I’ve been back seven or eight times, for Christ’s sake, since 2001 that’s pretty damn good as it’s 2024.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
