Trump’s White House has hit back twice as hard after Sabrina Carpenter blasted its use of her music in a video where ICE catch illegal immigrants, issuing a new clip in which the singer now gets a starring role
If popstar Sabrina Carpenter hoped to stop the White House using her tracks to promote its hard-line immigration policies, she’s had mixed success. Its new video doesn’t use her music… but shows her in person instead.
Sabrina had slammed the White House as “evil and disgusting” when a Trump administration clip on X used her song ‘Juno’ with the lyrics “Have you ever tried this one?” as ICE agents round up illegal aliens.
The latest video, entitled “PSA: If you’re a criminal illegal, you WILL be arrested & deported”, shows the singer on Saturday Night Live. “I think I might have to arrest someone for being too hot,” she says. But the words “too hot” are swapped out for “illegal.”
The singer stands next to SNL star Marcello Hernández, an American whose parents are from Cuba and the Dominican Republic. His arms are outstretched ready for handcuffs as he says, “Well, I turn myself in.”
After their brief cameo, the video switches to more footage of ICE making arrests, against a pounding soundtrack of Gucci Mane’s “I Get the Bag”.
The earlier video with her hit ‘Juno’ also showed ICE in action, chasing and catching illegal immigrants in Chicago, while mocking the protesters who try to confront the unit’s raids.
“Have you ever tried this one? Bye-bye” read the message with the earlier clip, posted on Monday. But the 26-year-old star slammed the video as “evil and disgusting”. “Do not ever involve me or my music to benefit your inhumane agenda,” she wrote
The White House hit back with a reference to her ‘Short n’ Sweet’ tour. Spokesperson Abigail Jackson said: “Here’s a Short n’ Sweet message for Sabrina Carpenter: we won’t apologize for deporting dangerous criminal illegal murderers, rapists, and paedophiles from our country.
“Anyone who would defend these sick monsters must be stupid, or is it slow?” “Stupid or is it slow” are lyrics from Sabrina’s hit ‘Manchild’.
‘Juno’, with its lyrics “Have you ever tried this one?”, refers to the sexual positions the singer performed on stage during her concerts in her Short ‘n’ Sweet tour. Fans sent the tune viral on TikTok by acting out their own saucy moves to the song.
But Sabrina Carpenter is just the latest in a long line of musicians to rage at Trump’s unauthorised use of their tunes.
The full list, starting with Abba and ending with French songwriter Yoann Lemoine, includes the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, and Phil Collins.
Even the frontman of the Village People moaned about Trump’s use of YMCA, although the president’s rallies rocketed the track right back to the top of the charts.
