The officer who went into the water to try to save the man had had a brick thrown at his car in an “act of recklessness” just 30 minutes earlier, but didn’t hesisate regardless
A pensioner has sadly died after crashing his Range Rover into a canal, despite officers rushing into the water to save him. The crash happened on Sunday (December 7) at 6:45pm after the car went into the water at Hirst Mill Crescent in Saltaire, Bradford, West Yorks.
Officers were able to rescue the 74-year-old from the canal but, despite receiving emergency medical care, he died shortly after.
It was later revealed that the officer who entered the freezing water to try to help the man had had his police vehicle hit by a brick just 30 minutes earlier – but had “without hesitation” tried to save the man.
In a post on Facebook, the Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team said the incident was a “stark reminder of the challenged our officers face every day”.
Despite the attack, the post said the officer, named as PC Everett, had “without hesitation” gone to the aid of the man who had entered the water.
The post described the brick being thrown at the vehicle as a “sheer act of recklessness”.
Police are appealing to witnesses to come forward who may have seen what happened prior to the crash.
The car could still be seen submerged in the water on Monday morning.
