An afternoon crash Monday involving a National Grid truck left one person dead and another seriously injured in Commack, authorities said.
The driver of a 2002 Honda Odyssey was eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway when he attempted to turn left onto Apple Lane and was struck by a westbound 2016 National Grid Freightliner truck about 4:40 p.m., Suffolk police said.
A passenger in the Honda, Joseph Dor, 99, of Wyandanch, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a statement issued early Tuesday.
The driver was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment of serious injuries; the driver of the Freightliner was not injured, police said.
The Honda was impounded for a safety check; police inspected and released the National Grid truck at the scene, police said.
In an e-mailed statement to Newsday, National Grid spokesperson Wendy Frigeria confirmed that a National Grid vehicle was involved in the collision.
“We are cooperating fully with the Suffolk County Police Department and assisting in their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Frigeria said. “As this is an active investigation, we are unable to provide further details at this time. We will share additional information as it becomes available.”
